Physiological research on the relationships between exercise, sleep,
and health, focusing mainly on the following topics:
(1) Neural mechanisms for the regulation of arterial pressure during
exercise and sleep. The study involves simultaneous measurements
of sympathetic nerve activity, arterial pressure, and energy metabolism
in rats with free cage activity and analyses of exercise- and sleep-induced
changes in the central neural mechanisms that regulate arterial
pressure.
(2) Effects of long-term salt loading on sympathetic nerve activity
and the regulatory mechanism for renal sodium excretion. Although
an excessive intake of salty foods is often associated with hypertension,
the underlying mechanism for this association has not yet been identified.
In this regard, we have investigated the sympathetic nerve activity
and levels of sodium excretion in the kidneys of rats fed a high/no
salt diet for a prolonged period.
