Browsing materials
You can browse materials on the bookstacks freely except for stack room(Rare books), stack room(Historical materials in NWU), the third stacks.When you have finished viewing materials, please return them to their original location or put them on the return stand.
(Please return materials that have already been processed for loan to the service desk.)

Borrowing
Student/staff ID card, or library card is required to check out materials.○How to borrow books
For books with barcode label, please borrow by the self-checkout machine.
For materials that cannot be checked out at the machine, please go to the Service Desk with student/staff ID card, or library card.
○How to borrow journals
Please fill out the journal borrowing form available at the Service Desk and submit it with your student/staff ID card, or library card.
The number of books and loan period are as follows.

About application for a library card
Long-term borrowing
During spring and summer holidays, long-term borrowing are available for students. Details will be informed on the bulletin board and website in advance.Renew the loan period
You can renew the loan period only once for materials that have not been reserved.If you wish to renew the loan period, please bring the materials on loan and your student/staff ID card or library card to the Service Desk within the loan period.
You can also renew loan period by online.
Log in to "Your library record" on the homepage by Narajo ID, click on "Borrowing Record List", check the boxes for the materials you wish to renew on the List, and then click on "Renew".
Reservation
When the material you wish to use is currently checked out by another user, you can make a reservation.Reservations can be made from WebOPAC with Narajo ID.
Materials that cannot be checked out
In principle, the following materials are in-library use only.〇 Reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, catalogs, yearbooks, bibliographies, etc.)
〇 New arrival periodicals (until the next issue is available)
〇 Audio-visual materials
However, reference books can be temporarily checked out from the library for special reasons.
Please ask at the Service Desk on the 1st floor if you wish to borrow the books.
Returning
When the academic information center is open, please return books to the Service Desk on the 1st floor.Returning books directly to the stacks does not mean that they have been returned unless they are processed.
When the academic information center is closed, please put the books in the book drop(返本口) on the right side of the entrance of the center.
Please return materials such as Japanese-style books, materials with CDs or other appendices, journals, etc. directly to the Service Desk.
*If you have not returned materials by the due date, you can not borrow another materials.
Please be sure to observe the due date.
If you returned overdue materials, you may borrow materials newly from the following day.
How to use audio-visual materials
Audio-visual materials such as videos, CDs, records, laser discs, and DVDs are available for use only in the center.Please go to the Service Desk at the 1st floor to borrow headphones in exchange for your student/staff ID card, or library card, and use Audio-Visual booths on the 1st floor with the same number as the headphones.
Personal audiovisual materials can also be used.
Up to three people can watch together in booths 3 and 6.
If more than two people want to watch, group study rooms are also available.
How to use rare books
If you wish to use rare books, please apply in advance at the Service Desk on the 1st floor. Materials may only be used inside the center.(Regarding the use of materials in stack room(Rare books))
How to use historical materials of NWU
If you wish to use the materials, please apply in advance to the Service Desk. Materials may only be browsed inside our center.(Regarding the use of materials in stack room(Historical materials in NWU))
Purchase Request
NWU students may place a purchase request on the item that is not held by our library.Please submit a request through "New Purchase Request" on the homepage. Please note that materials which are more suitable for individual purchase ( journals, paperbacks, examination books, etc. ) are excluded.
To check the status of your request, please refer to the "Your Library Record".
Please log in to "Your Library Record" on the homepage and click "Materials under request for purchase" .
If purchased, you will be notified by email when the materials become available.
If a purchase cannot be made, "Acknowledgement" will be displayed in red text in the "Status" section.
Photocppying of library materials
With the exception of some materials such as rare books, materials held by the University may be photocopied within the limits of copyright law.The applicant is responsible for all responsibilities associated with copyrights.

To use the machine, please fill out the photocopy application form and submit it to the service desk.
(Photocopying is limited to materials owned by the University and within the permissible limits of the copyright law.)
Book Label
A "book label" like the one on the left is attached to the bottom of the spine of a book.The book label shows the call number of the book.
The call number indicates the location of the book.
The books in the stacks are arranged in the order of the call number, so please use this call number to find the material you need.
Japanese,Chinese,Korean books (the second stack・reading room of 2nd floor)
Most of the materials accepted after 1952 are arranged by call number according to NDC classification.Japanese books with call numbers from 000 to 374 are located on the 1st floor of the second stack.
Japanese books with call numbers from 375 to 900 are located on the 2nd floor of the second stack.
Some Japanese books (mainly recently acquired) are located in the reading room on the 2nd floor.
Large Japanese books and very large Japanese books are stored separately in the basement stacks, reading room of 2nd floor, and reference books room.
Foregin books(Automatic stacks)
Foreign language books are mainly located in the automatic stacks.When you request to retrieve materials from OPAC, the staff will prepare them for you.

Old classification books(Automatic stacks)
Books whose call numbers start with "K" or "E" (e.g. K60/255) are materials collected between the opening of Nara Women's Higher Normal School and 1951.These are mainly located in the automatic stacks.
When you request to retrieve materials from OPAC, the staff will prepare them for you.

Materials published before 1868(the third stack)
The third stack is usually locked. If you wish to use it, please ask at the service desk on the 1st floor (Weekdays 9:00-17:00).Materials may only be used inside the library. When entering the stack, please place your baggage in a locker.

Graduate students, faculty, and staff of the University may enter the stack. All other users may only browse materials.
Reference books(Reference books room)
Encyclopedias, various dictionaries, handbooks, picture catalogs, yearbooks, catalogs of library holdings, catalogs of publications, catalogs of journals, subject bibliographies, indexes of journal articles, and annotated bibliography are reference books.Japanese books are arranged according to NDC classification, and foreign books are arranged according to DDC classification.
A label like above is attached to the spine.
Materials with this sticker can be checked out only on the same day.
Older editions of reference books and back issues of white papers are available for regular checkout.
When you request to retrieve materials from OPAC, the staff will prepare them for you.

Materials for international students(Browsing Area)
Materials to help international students better understand Japan and study in Japan (materials to introduce Japan, to support daily life in Japan, to study Japanese language, etc.) are available.The spine of the book is labeled "留".
The materials are also available for non-international students.
Journals
Journals published this year are located in the lounge.When you open the front of the stack, you will find this year's back issues inside.
The latest issues cannot be checked out.
Japanese Journals: Arranged in alphabetical order by title. Back issues are located in the basement stacks.
Foreign Journals: Arranged alphabetically by title. Back issues are located in the automatic stacks.
Japanese journals (the basement stacks)
Back issues of Japanese journals, bulletins of universities and institutions are located in the basement stacks.The journals are arranged in alphabetical order, with university bulletins followed by general periodicals.
University bulletins are arranged in alphabetical order of university name.
General journals are arranged in alphabetical order by title.
Journals from China and Korea are placed after Japanese journals.
Please handle the electric bookshelves with care.
Foregin journals (the Automatic stacks)
Back issues of foreign journals (for last year and before) are in the automatic stacks. When you request to retrieve materials from OPAC, the staff will prepare them for you.For details, please refer to "How to use the automatic stacks" (PDF).

Some materials are displayed in the Library Catalog as being held outside of the Academic Information Center.These are materials that are stored in research offices for educational, research, or administrative purposes.
When using these materials, please contact each research office directly if you are a member of the university.

The Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Libraries (the Service) is provided by the National Diet Library, Japan (NDL) as a means of making digitized versions of out-of-print or otherwise difficult-to-obtain materials available to the general public at public or university libraries that subscribe to the Service.Please apply at the Service Desk and use the service at the search area.
