Cultural Anthropology of Everyday Life

The aim of this course is to understand the
characteristic features of culture and how culture and human
behavior patterns and the shape of their activities are linked
from a cultural anthropological perspective. By attending
all the lectures you will be able to state the characteristics
of human behavior and acquire basic anthropological knowledge
on topics such as: human evolution, the biological basis of
behavior, reproductive activity, the composition of family,
power, symbolism, the context of behavior etc. By looking
at concrete examples, this knowledge will let you have a deeper
understanding of events, problems and matters of concern in
your everyday life. Furthermore, you should aim to acquire
the fundamentals for actively applying this knowledge to the
construction of culture and humanities henceforth. |

Practicum in Ethnography

Ethnography is the description and analysis
of materials obtained by observing the daily behavior, activities
and lifestyle of people and listening to their views. Comparing
peoples' lifestyle, everyday affairs, behavior, emotions and
symbolism is useful for understanding how a society's way
of living is culturally constructed and helps us pursue methods
for solving problems in modern society. In this course students
will deepen their understanding of the fundamental methods
to this approach and by using English for practical activities
will also develop their rudimentary ability. |

Consumer Economics

With the socio-economic changes in Japan,
consumer affairs have become more diverse and complicated
as various economic challenges and consumer problems have
arisen. In the study of consumer economics, we systematically
organize these problems by their historical development and
socio-economical background. Furthermore, by simultaneously
pursuing and speculating about the mechanism and phenomena
of consumption from a theoretical and economical perspective,
we can also carry out thorough investigation into associated
fields such as marketing and consumer psychology from a multi-disciplinary
perspective. Finally, by dealing with concrete consumption
phenomena, we can carry out verified analyses using econometric
methods. |

Some of the above are in the scope of certification exams
for civil servants, basic information technology engineers,

a practical side to it. |

can mean gender, sex or sexuality, so the aim of this course
is to be able to look at various events in society from the
point of view of gender. Finally, you will learn about reproduction
from various aspects because that is where differences in

Family takes various forms and
shapes throughout the world. So it is difficult to find a
satisfying definition of what is meant by family.
Based on the fact that family was originally diversified,
the transition of the Japanese family after WW? is traced
out. In Japan, during the rapid post WW? economic growth,
the modern family emerged with the division of
labor roles according to sex. However, in the latter phase
of this modern period, it became difficult to sustain the
modern family. And while the concept of family was a private
matter it also became a subject of debate for politicians. |

Cultural Study of Human Relationships

You will study how human relationships differ
between cultures and from a socio-psychological approach how
prejudices and group conflict occurs. You will also be asked
to consider what both collectivism and individualism from
the perspective of one to one relationships and individual
and group relationships. In class, we will use games and group
discussion, so students are expected to actively take part
in the class. In the latter half of the course, you will study
communication methods through debate. |

Course on Reading Foreign literature in the
Field of Human Relationships and Culture

The aim of the course is to become familiar
with fundamental literature on human relationships and in
particular social psychology. Getting used to reading papers
in English is good practice for writing a graduation thesis.
Students also practice giving presentations and learn how
to debate in tutorial style classes. |

The aim of this course is to obtain a concrete
understanding of and knowledge on contemporary Japanese Consumer
Legal System. By acquiring basic knowledge of the Japanese
legal system, consumer contracts, safety regulations for goods
and services, antimonopoly laws etc, we will discuss in sequence,
programs for orderly marketing as well as lawsuits and alternative
dispute resolution (ADR) as the means of solving the problem
of consumer conflict and finally examine the function of legal
professional such as lawyers etc. |

Lifestyle and Law

By examining the lifestyles of both men and
women we shall investigate how our modern diversified lifestyle
comes in contact with the law. Our life, life-stages and life
style have a surprisingly close connection with the law. This
connection will be clarified and it is hoped that you will
understand that they have a great influence on the changes
of how the State uses the law as a vehicle to intervene in
our private and public lives. |

How the class will progress: (1) We will pick
up actual problems concerned with household economics. (2)
By using concrete examples we will study the method and process
of analyzing these problems by using official governmental
statistics. Next, (3) students will be given exercises where
they actually try to analyze, discuss and comment on certain
problems by themselves (in the form of a report. Finally,
to end the course you will be required to apply the knowledge
you have learned and (4) each student will be given their
own topic, e.g. A report on XXX economics. After
carrying out an analysis and discussion, each student will
be expected to give a short presentation of their report in
the last lesson of the course. (5) Finally they must submit
their work in the form of a report. |

History of medicine, Society and Culture

One way of approaching how to consider the
root of the problem with medicine in contemporary society,
is to analyze it by going back to the Edo period when Japanese
began to be modernized and analyze the historical process
by which the prototype of Japanese medicine was formed. And
at the same time by comparing Europe and China, we will clarify
the characteristic features of Japanese medicine. To be more
precise, we shall look at certain illnesses and examine the
reality of medicine and how those who are sick are treated
socially. |

Lectures will be held on the history of women
in Japan and Europe by referring to beauty as the subject
matter. The problem of beauty and appearance is widely studies
in fields such as folklore, anthropology, sociology, biology;
however, in this class tasks will be set and analysis will
be performed from a historical point of view. The approach
to the class will be one where each student collects materials
from newspapers, magazines and books and by learning from
them looks at how this theme is discussed in contemporary
society. |
