Graduate
Program in Culture and Humanities |
The aim of this program is to
carry out research and provide education on the relationship
between the living environment and the social and cultural
characteristics of persons striving for a prospective and
stable life.
[ Program Outline ]
The course was set up by combining the culture and humanities
course and the life management and welfare course of the former
graduate program on Human Life and Environmental studies.
Since there is a reciprocal overlapping in the main themes
of both the research and education in these courses, by integrating
them we can offer a unique graduate program that covers all
life and lifestyle related fields in the study of the Humanities.
The content of research and education in the Department of
Culture and Humanities in the Faculty of Human Life and Environmental
Studies has been both expanded and deepened with the aim of
producing graduates with a higher level of knowledge and research
ability.
Research Guidance
A wide range of subjects from various fields such as sociology
(Family, Gender, Welfare), economics (consumption, living),
cultural anthropology, social psychology, history and law
are offered. In this program you will have more than one supervisor,
so please consult with your main supervisor about the subjects
you intend to take. Below is an example of the combination
of subjects you can take, however, please make full use of
the interdisciplinary features this program offers and create
your own curriculum. |

Life System Model Course
|
It has been shown that humans exist as an open system
that generates the consumption of resources at both
a biological level and a level of daily existence. The
classes offered in this model have "consumption"
as the key word and this interdisciplinary course uses
sociological methods to investigate subjects concerned
with how our lives are managed and the wellbeing connected
with this. In other words, the distribution and management
of life resources are investigated and a systematic
analysis is performed as well as an understanding gained
regarding the situation of challenges in life such as
life's prosperity and wellbeing and how individuals
and society are involved with each other and operate
Main Subjects :
Consumer Behavior and Environment Studies, Studies
in the Consumer Legal System, Life Economics Systems,
Welfare Sociology, Life Risk Management.

Education Philosophy
With regards to the problems facing the 21st Century, we
try to find issues to be tackled from the perspective of
culture and humanities and raise students who are able to
solve such issues.
Issues affecting out modern lives are extremely varied,
such as gender equality, environmental conservation, the
aging society, etc. This program provides an educational
curriculum that straddles both sociology and the Humanities.
It endeavors to nurture students that can truly contribute
to society by being able to apply what they have learned
to the real world by developing the ability to discover
problems within society as they expose everyday problems
around them and be able to clarify and logically analyze
the complicated mutual associations of these many problems.
The type of students we are after
In this culture and humanities program, we are looking for
students who have a strong desire and interest in thinking
about how things work at both the human level focusing on
life at home to the living environment as a whole. We welcome
students regardless of their background, be it in the Humanities
or Science, who are eager to discover new knowledge and
awareness in a "world" familiar to them by creatively
fusing together perspectives and analyses from both sociology
and the Humanities.
Career options for Graduates
It is expected that students will pave the road for themselves
in various careers such as in public administration ( general
administrative posts, examiners for the Family Court etc,)
as local or national civil servants, junior high school
and senior high school teachers, leaders in regional women's
organizations, various positions in businesses such as the
planning, consumer or welfare section or in Think-Tanks
etc. Many PhD. students also aim to become faculty or researchers
at universities, Junior Colleges or research institutes.
