The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides follow-up services for the former international students to support the activities of those who wish to continue their research upon returning to their home countries.
1.Follow-up Research Guidance
- Program Outline
- JASSO dispatches research advisors to visit international students who have returned to their countries after studying in Japan and who are currently engaged in education or research at schools to provide advice and academic support.
- Eligible countries and regions
- Asia, Cental and South America, the Middle East Africa, and other regions.
- Eligibility
- (1) Former international students whose previous stay to study in Japan was under a "College Student" visa.
(2) Former international students who have graduated from a faculty or completed a master/doctoral course in a Japanese university.
(3) 5 years must not have passed since they returned home after their study in Japan.
(4) Former international students who are currently engaged in educational, research activities in university, research institute, or government in their home country/region.
(5) Have never been provided this follow-up services by JASSO. - Length of program
- About 10 days. The number of teachers dispatched is about 10.
- Benefits
- Round-trip air ticket, living expenses(16,000yen/day), expenses for guidance (up to 10,000 yen /research advisor)

2.JASSO Follow-up Research Fellowships
- Program Outline
- International students who have returned to their countries after studying in Japan and are currently active in education, academic research or public administration, are invited to a Japanese university to conduct joint research with relevant academics.
- Eligibility (Applicants must satisfy all the following conditions.)
- (1) Former international students who have nationality of a developing country in Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions, and who currently work in education, research field, or government in their home country/region
(2) Former international students whose previous stay to study in Japan was under a "College Student" visa.
(3) Former international students who have graduated from a faculty or completed a master/doctoral course in Japanese university.
(4) Under 45 years old. At least 1 years since returning from Japan.
(5) Have never been provided this follow-up Research Fellowships by JASSO. - Research period
- Up to 90 days
- Benefits
- Round-trip air ticket, living allowance (11,000 yen/day)
